Published on September 27, 2018
The 28th annual Especially for You® (EFY) Race Against Breast Cancer is almost here! To date, more than 14,000 people have registered to participate in the Oct. 7 race.
The race supports the Especially for You fund, providing mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies and other breast-care and gynecological cancer services to individuals in need. During the past 10 years, 6,400+ individuals have accessed nearly 14,000 services through the EFY Fund.
Individuals can register for the race online at www.especiallyforyourace.org until race day. On-site registration will be available during packet pick-up times from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, in the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center parking lot; from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5, in Mercy Lot #19; and from 8 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, in Mercy Lot #19. On race morning, registration can be completed at Mercy’s Hall-Perrine Cancer Center from 7 to 7:30 a.m. For additional information, call the EFY race line at (319) 398-6582.
On race day, opening ceremonies begin at 7:45 a.m.; the race starts at 8 a.m. The starting line is on Tenth St. SE in front of Hall-Perrine Cancer Center. Race participants are encouraged to stay for the post-race party near the finish line at NewBo, which includes family and children’s activities, live music, a health fair and a pancake breakfast near the finish line.
On race morning, breast cancer survivors are invited to gather at the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center parking lot, to the right of the building’s main entrance, at 7:15 a.m. to participate in a group photo, which will be taken at 7:30 a.m.
Thanks to the generosity of Park Cedar Rapids and NTS, several parking options and free shuttle service are available to race participants.

The EFY race and fund are dedicated to the memory of Sandy Knight, a Whittier resident and General Mills employee who died of breast cancer in July 1991. Knight co-founded Mercy’s Especially for You After Breast Cancer Support Group. Her dream was to establish a race to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and education.
Breast cancer is most treatable and curable when detected in its earliest stages. Even so, breast cancer claims more than 40,000 lives each year. This number can be reduced with early detection through clinical breast exam and mammography.
