Mercy Medical Center offers focal point therapy for prostate cancer
Mercy Medical Center is proud to announce a new, non-invasive treatment option for men with localized prostate cancer – Sonablate, or focal therapy, using high-intensity focused ultrasound. This advanced approach is now available through Mercy Urologist Matthew Ferroni, MD, offering patients a way to treat cancer while preserving quality of life.
“Focal therapy gives us the ability to target and destroy cancerous tissue without the need for surgery or radiation,” Dr. Ferroni said. “For many men, this means fewer side effects and a faster return to normal activities.”
Unlike traditional prostatectomy procedures, one of the most significant benefits of focal therapy is its potential to minimize sexual side effects, helping patients maintain quality of life. The procedure uses focused sound waves to generate heat and destroy only the affected tissue, leaving surrounding healthy tissue unharmed. It’s also performed without incisions, which typically allows for quicker recovery and minimal downtime.
Plus, recent studies show that outcomes for focal therapy are comparable to surgery for certain prostate cancers, with many patients able to avoid additional interventions years after treatment. Currently, the procedure is covered only by Medicare.
This innovative option reflects Mercy’s commitment to bringing the latest advancements in cancer care to the community.
