Frequently Asked Questions About Getting a Second Opinion
What is a second opinion?
Getting a second opinion—having another doctor or specialist review your case—is a valuable way to ensure you’re exploring every option. It can confirm your diagnosis or treatment plan and provide reassurance that you're on the right path. A second opinion can also offer a fresh perspective, as treatment approaches can vary—some doctors take a more conservative route, while others may recommend a more aggressive strategy. Another expert may even suggest options your current provider hadn’t considered.
Will my insurance cover a second opinion?
Insurance will typically cover a consultation. In addition, we have patient resource staff members who can look at your specific insurance to fully understand the financial information as it relates to your treatment. They are a great resource to answer any specific financial questions you have.
How quickly can I get in?
You will be contacted by a nurse navigator within 2 business days who will explain the process and work with you to obtain your release of health information in order to gather necessary medical records. Please allow about 1 week for record collection and physician review. We will then contact you to discuss next steps and schedule an appointment. Please note, in some cases, we may determine that our services are not the best fit for your specific care needs, but we will do our best to guide you toward appropriate next options.
If the decision is made to be seen by one of our providers, you will be asked to fill out and sign a health authorization form.
Why should I get a second opinion?
When it comes to cancer, having the right treatment plan and the right care environment matters. At Hall-Perrine Cancer Center, we’re committed to making it easy for patients and their families to explore their options without the stress of losing valuable time. We believe that once patients experience our compassionate team, state-of-the-art facilities, and advanced treatment options tailored to specific types of cancer, they feel confident in choosing to continue their care with us.
Will my doctor be offended?
Don't worry about offending your doctor by getting a second opinion. In fact, your doctor may be a good resource to refer you to another specialist. Getting a second opinion is a frequent occurrence and most physicians are open to another doctor's feedback.
