State-of-the-Art Surgical Services & Technology
Hall-Perrine Cancer Center's surgical treatment removes tumors or parts of tumors in order to control the disease or cure the patient, where possible. This approach can be used as a therapy or comfort measure, as well, to help ease the patient's symptoms and improve their quality of life.
BREAST CANCER
- SCOUT MD™
Using SCOUT MD technology, a tiny reflector is placed in the target tissue any time prior to breast cancer surgery. Using the SCOUT Guide, surgeons are able to detect the reflector – which is the size of a grain of rice – to precisely locate the reflector and tumor within one millimeter of accuracy. Mercy was the first in Iowa to adopt the SCOUT MD system as a standard of care for breast cancer surgery patients.
- Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Clinic is under the direction of Dr. Dominic Heffel, MD, FACS, and provides care for breast cancer reconstruction surgery, along with traditional plastic and cosmetic procedures.
- da Vinci robotic surgical system enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures, including prostatectomies and hysterectomies, through very small incisions with unmatched precision.
ONCOLOGIC CANCERS
- Cancer treatment may sometimes include surgery as part of a comprehensive care plan. Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Brendon Honick, MD, MS, specializes in many surgical procedures focused on achieving the best possible outcomes.
GYNECOLOGIC CANCERS
- The Gynecologic Oncology Clinic is led by Dr. Abby Gonik, MD, and provides oncology surgical procedures for a variety of gynecologic cancers.
PROSTATE CANCER
Prostate cancer care is led by Urologists from Mercy Urology Clinic.
- High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU - Focal Therapy) uses high-intensity focused ultrasound to target and destroy diseased prostate tissue while leaving the surrounding, healthy tissue unharmed.
- Prostatectomy: Using the da Vinci robotic system, your surgeon removes the prostate with greater precision and control—often resulting in less pain, less blood loss, a shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery.
